Used Treadmills: Information on Finding and Buying

Used treadmills can be a good idea if you've been wanting to get a quality treadmill for your home, but have found the prices a little too steep.

In order to know if you're getting a good deal with a used treadmill, you should be aware of new treadmill prices. Price ranges for treadmills are roughly: Budget $500-$1500, Mid-Range $1500-$3000 and Quality Treadmills $3000-up. Look for machines with strong treadmill motors: 2 HP continuous duty or above. (Tip: DC motors are less noisy). Remember, you generally get what you pay for. Budget treadmills are basically junk. Their noisy, don't run smoothly, and aren't built to last as long. Mid-range and quality treadmills are definitely pricier, but that doesn't mean there aren't some great deals to be found when buying used treadmills.

Used Treadmills: What Are My Options?

Used treadmills generally fall into two categories: for sale by owner and refurbished or remanufactured. For sale by owner is fairly self-explanatory; people who bought a treadmill in the past and are no longer using it or they've purchased a new treadmill and wish to get rid of the old one. With these treadmills, you typically don't get a warranty (unless some of the warranty is still in effect from the previous owner) or any kind of guarantees. However, you often find the best deals in this category.

Refurbished/remanufactured treadmills are also used treadmills, but they are usually for sale by retailers. They are often previously owned and/or last year's models. Much like buying a used car from a dealership, remanufactured treadmills will have been spruced up to look and work like new. Often, warranties are available with these kind of treadmills, though not typically as long-lasting as when purchasing a brand new machine. Refurbished or remanufactured treadmills are usually more expensive than treadmills that are for sale by owner.

Where to Find Used Treadmills

Many online retailers sell refurbished/remanufactured treadmills right alongside their new stock. For example, Mega Fitness advertises remanufactured treadmills advertised on their regular treadmill page. They often have deals offering free shipping as well.

If you're looking for a for sale by owner treadmill, your two main options are to watch the classifieds of your local newspaper and check eBay periodically. If you buy through eBay, make sure to check the sellers feedback rating. Don't buy from somebody with a lot of negatives. Also, try to find a seller that has experience shipping large fitness items like treadmills or home gyms.

Don't buy impulsively. Watch the market for a few weeks and see what these items are going for. Then you'll know when a real deal comes along, and you can snatch it up quickly.
