How about Those Power Rods?

I'm not huge into body building, but my primary reason for buying a Bowflex was to increase muscle strength. Thus, the question of whether the power rods would work as effectively as free weights was on my mind.

During my first couple of workouts, I took things easy since it had been a while since I trained with weights, and I know how sore you are that first morning after. Also, I was learning the dynamics of each exercise anew. Even though I knew my way around the gym, the Bowflex put a few new spins on familiar exercises.

I didn't get very sore after my first lower body and upper body workout which made me wonder how effective the power rods were. Now I don't know if there's any sure correlation between how sore you are next day to how effective your workout was, but I've always assumed that if you feel it the next day, it probably means you worked some muscles that haven't been worked in a while.

For my next two workouts, I beefed up the resistance. This time, I did feel a little soreness in my muscles in the morning. It wasn't that hobble-around-the-house, can't-get-out-of-bed type of feeling, but that's not necessarily a bad thing unless your into pain. It did cast doubts in my mind, however, making me wonder if the power rod resistance was as effective as lifting free weights or using the machines at the gym that move stacks of weights.

Since the only way to prove that one way or another was to keep working out, I continued on my Bowflex program.
