Bowflex Lawsuits

Bowflex (run by Nautilus) has been hit by lawsuits of late, relating to injuries and their failure to inform users to known product defects. A patch kit is now available to fix the Power Pro (the oldest, and hardest hit model), but Nautilus still had to pay over $950,000 in claims, according to CNN Money's Nautilus a Little Sore article. "Among other injuries, the CPSC alleges that Nautilus knew of 27 incidents when the backboard bench broke apart and collapsed. The Vancouver, Wash.-based company allegedly knew but did not report to CPSC that consumers suffered back, disc and neck injuries and falls resulting in chipped teeth," says the article.  This information can only leave a sore taste in the mouth of loyal Bowflex customers.  After paying upwards of $2,000 for this home gym, users expect a quality piece of equipment.  Though most users may never experience troubles with their machine, it does leave a bit of concern.  (Every Power Pro owner should order the Bowflex upgrade kit regardless of history).

One cannot help but wonder about the future of Bowflex.  Though they have introduced many new models of late, and their unfailing presence in the informercial market seems as strong as ever, one wonders if this nearly 1 million dollar settlement will make Nautilus think twice about continuing the line.  They seem to be offering more home fitness alternatives these days (such as the Treadclimber and the SelectTech barbells).  Only time will tell what the future will bring to Bowflex users and potential Bowflex buyers.
